MILTON STUDIO

Project Details

Milton Studio, aka The Emerald Ballroom.

Renowned broadcaster and international DJ Gilles Peterson commissioned Wilson Brothers to design the interior of his new studio.

Extracts from the brief:
The space needed to feel (and sound) warm, and should not feel like a record warehouse!
The space should feel classy, like a ‘timeless music-meet-up spot’.
With a subtle feeling of ‘WOW’ when you enter, based on style NOT fashion.

Wilson Brothers’ analogy:
Milton is like a fantasy connoisseur’s record shop, where NOTHING is for sale.

We inherited a three-storey purpose-built shell from architects PAD, and collaborated closely with Gilles to craft a bespoke space for creative thinking, broadcasting, and recording.

The design embraces a minimal material palette—Pine plywood wraps the entire interior and is used throughout the custom-built furniture.
Acoustic ceiling panels made from Hay board, and an Oak parquet floor complete the warm and tactile environment.

Fully bespoke shelving lines the walls, featuring integrated and adaptable sound baffles, a routered groove for record display, and concealed ambient lighting.
Custom DJ booths were designed for both the ground floor and basement levels, whilst a unique podcasting and broadcasting coffee table serves as a centerpiece. A combination of fixed and mobile record bins ensure the extensive vinyl collection remains well-organized and easily transportable across all three floors.

It was a real privilege for us to create this special environment for GP dedicated to sharing his extensive vinyl and music archive with special guests and global listeners alike.
